UPDATED: All's Well That Ends Well?

Hopefully.

UPDATE: Just ahead of President Trump's address to the nation, we're learning that Iran warned Iraq of the coming missile strikes and--wink, wink--Iraq warned the US, including that Iran did not seek war with the US:

  1. "Death to America!" "Revenge!"

Missles shot off with no results.

    "Wait! Wait! Let's have peace."

  2. So Iran bravely shot some missiles into the desert and blew up a passenger plane over Tehran in the process? I didn't realize the Persians were as militarily inept as the Arabs. At this point Trump could (will?) express pity on Iran and offer to sell them some better weapons.
So much for a new "war" with Iran. Sad.

    1. The Iranians can be good fighters. When the mullahs let officers and men of the Shah's military out of prison to fight Iraq they kicked ass. Problem was that they had no resupply/spare parts so eventually got worn down.

    2. They're outmatched against US, Euro, Russian military tech, but compared to the rest of the world their defense industries are quite advanced. Other ME countries purchase Western products, but their mastery of those products is suspect.

  3. Maybe DJT will offer the leaders of Iran free exile at one of his resorts.

    1. It would be a gracious and Trump-worthy gesture.

    2. Add in, as a bonus, their own luxury executive jet equipped with hot and cold running vivacious, talented, and willing stewardesses, and a starring role in their own Reality TV Show with a guaranteed 5 year run, plus residuals, and I'll bet most of the Iranian Government will be waiting at the Tehran airport before sundown with bags packed. Talk about "outside the box" foreign policy!

  4. Before the President’s address, Jennifer Griffin described the missile raid. It wounds as though it was highly calibrated to not hit targets where it could have done far more damage, a warning was received from “chatter” (her word), and so there were no casualties. A number of missiles did not even explode. And, as there was no US retaliation, the Iranian regime has apparently said “that’s it”.

The President’s speech was excellent. His opening line - that for as long a he is president, Iran will not be allowed to have a nuclear weapon - was brilliant. And the stagecraft was stunning. At the end he spoke to the Iranian people - although the whole speech seemed to me to be geared to them.

What will the feckless Dems like little Ro whatshisname do with their hot plans for more impeachment because of the taking out of Soleimani? They should get busy and try to take care of our country for a change.

  5. Mark, I wonder if it's worth speculating that Obama's Iran policy was due to the influence of his muse, Valerie Jarrett, who was born in Iran.

I just can't see it any other way. Pallets of cash, unfreezing assets, no (or toothless) nuclear inspection regime as a path to normalization and peace doesn't add up...

A personal interest based on personal influence--not a US strategic foreign policy and national security interest.

    1. I've always felt that that was a factor because, as you say, there seems to be a very personal philo-Iranian element to the policies he pursued. Those policies didn't appear to integrate that well into an overall foreign policy.

    2. And of course, Huma Abedin's alleged family connections to Muslim Brotherhood.... claims which were "debunked" by WaPo, Pelosi, McCain and others.

  6. An excellent white paper out of Israel at https://besacenter.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/168-The-Soleimani-Killing-Initial-Assessments.pdf

Some good thinking about the recently-deceased terrorist, but it's worth reading just for the last few pages, which are golden.
